Photonic nanostructure
- Spring semester, Friday 4th period
About this course
Progress on nanotechnologies is contributing to the development of various fields including photonics. The property of light can be controlled by using sophisticated nanostructures that have a structural size on the order of an optical wavelength. Among various nanostructures, structures that control the property of light are called photonic nanostructures. Photonic nanostructure is now an important building block for constructing novel optical devices. Some examples of nanostructures are, photonic crystals, meta-materials, plasmonic nanostructures, and silicon-photonics, all of which are belonging to photonic nanostructures.
In this course, I will introduce the basics and applications of the photonic nanostructure. First, I will lecture the basics of light; in particular, the behavior of light in nano space. Next, I will introduce the unique property of light in the photonic nanostructure. In particular, the student is required to understand and write a program on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, which is a powerful tool for analyzing nano-photonics.
